PermalinkAn old musicologists’ legend tells that the hurdy-gurdy (the stringed instrument, not the barrel organ) once challenged the bagpipe for supremacy, but was defeated and made the bagpipe’s servant.
The only surviving clue about the Fourth Instrument comes from a fragment of Acidophilus’ comedy “The Figs”, where there is a slighting reference to “that moon-[faced?] twanging bastard”. Unfortunately, the many lacunae in the text prevent a more accurate reading. [email protected]=Q
