The Hidden Almanac for 2013-09-20

Today in history, the last performance by composer Irving Fleming happened 100 years ago. There is also a turtle. It is also the feast day of St. Calliope. In the garden, we discuss deer prevention.

Be safe, and stay out of trouble.

I always thought the human hair thing was…er, awkward until the #$*%& deer walked through the cantaloupes, either stepping on each, and/or taking a single bite from each, ruining the entire crop. I then considered hanging deer from various posts in the garden…

    I definitely need a St. Calliope medal…

  4. I believe that a recording of one of Fleming’s masterpieces was put to good use by W. Heath Robinson :

“Even his garden spade, I understand, was once the First Movement of an oratorio which, when performed at the Albert Hall in 1912, evoked shrill paeans from the critics and was faintly audible in Bayswater.” 7@=Q
